Nicky. What’s so funny? Group therapy for self-esteem

Nicky spends all her spare time on social media. She can’t put down her phone. She has countless connections, yet she somehow feels alone

In the group Nicky is bubbly and amusing: everyone warms to her. The group begin to notice that that is the only way she comes across. Does she make a joke out of everything?

Nicky says that this is her way to make people like her: she feels lonely - nothing about her is interesting. The group invite her to talk about that

Nicky says that she’s always felt boring compared to her sisters: to make up for that she tries to tell amusing stories. The group wonder whether she might come across as ‘performing’ in a way that puts people off

Nicky relaxes. She starts contributing to the conversation without always trying to make people laugh. She feels less like ‘hiding’ in social media and makes new positive connections. Her loneliness lifts
